VoIP Ideasupdated (unedited/thinking aloud): What is VoIP? voice over IP. Person to Person voice communications. Voice Messaging. ===== VOICE ===== Media? Communication? Related Services Translation. Speech to TEXT. Clients and Client Devices? PSTN, SIP, IM Clients. Web Sites. Streaming Audio software. Social Networks. RSS Feeds. What am I looking for? What are the end results? Delegation? VM/IM => CHAT/VOICE CHAT/CONFERENCE/TRANSCRIPTION/BROADCAST Addressing? Internet Service Bus? Enum? Ubiquitous IM / In lieu of standard phone. Jeff Pulver's call for VoIP ideas. http://pulverblog.pulver.com/archives/007256.html Some interesting perspective from Jeff, and echoed in another article I recently read about the VoIP industry that I haven't got handy to offer as a link. But the summary is - the opportunity to do something interesting is available! Brainstorming a little... How do I use VoIP? gizmoproject - my primary VoIP client. I have a very small IM list in Gizmo. and rarely logon. I use for outbound calling - and like the integration in WEB Applications. Mostly from a distribution work flow perspective - in that I can create data, and people can make and transcribe calls with me. Information is instantly shared as data is captured. Skype - i will occassionally check out skype and make calls. I have used their call a bunch of people at same time feature. Les.net - I have a few DIDs to play with, that are now associated with actual projects. Intouch Networks - provide a "programmed" number for a charity event I am involved with. ComputerJones.com - provides an asterix server to manage an IVR w/ inbound/outbound services setup. Web based call me now feature. FWD - checked out, installed, uninstalled. But intend to take another look given the recent call to arms. Unbundling? VoIP API I have started an email and stopped several times starting to document and make a case for the creation of an API for VoIP services at In Touch and Les. I still get excited by the notion. Why an API? integration into applications/services, free and easy access to capabilities. What would I build if I had time? Online Classified phone number lending - ie extensions. link to VoiceMail, EMail, Land Line - rules based on item status. ie if sold tell user the item was sold. if not sold forward call to my home during the day - if no answer - voicemail to email. is this innovative? maybe not - but it uses the technology in an effective way. (1) Privacy. (2) Complete control of incoming calls (3) Real time status on item. This feature would really encourage sellers to update status of item once sold. Adding value to web and real world environments. Booty Line! (temporary/privileged) numbers or extensions. w/ privacy features. linked to social networks. openid etc. ie you can program how, when and where you receive phone calls.

EC2 image directoryAmazon has a suite of web services. http://www.amazon.com/gp/browse.html?node=3435361 I haven't taken the time to absorb all of them, but two are significant. EC2 and S3 EC2 (Elastic Cloud) - you can create a scaleable abstract image of a server. This image can be immediately duplicated to scale to match demands on your services. - you can create many different images that talk in their abstract environment - ie a server farm. - very inexpensive. - very scaleable. S3 - blob storage - incremental, inexpensive scaleable storage. great for backups, online datastores etc. - fees based on streams (traffic) and storage I am interested because - I was installing Twitter, since it is all the rage - but since my IM is on my server in Dallas, running privately on a VPN, I am worried if I make my IM server public to interface with public services - I may have load issues on my server - so I thought... hmmm I wonder if there is an EC2 image available for OpenFire IM Server. Really I know that there isn't, but there should be - and I imagine a download repository of Amazon EC2 images - very similar to the VMWare appliances that are available for download. Have you seen the VMWare appliance directory?). VMWare link for reference. http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/ I also imagine, small technical entrepreneurs could offer services helping people establish/develop/maintain their EC2 image farms. These guys (random link) http://info.rightscale.com/ look like they are marketing themselves as EC2/S3 experts An Example here: http://pauldowman.com/projects/ruby-on-rails-ec2/

RSS Aggregation (rambling)I have been spending some time lately thinking about Dave Whiners comments on RSS Aggregation and what is wrong with facebook... [link here] RSS Aggregation - I'll throw some links here. mugg I think is one site. there are many. Social Dashboard - receive selected RSS feeds from my social network. - allow me to package my feeds - openid - profile - foaf My complaint with FACEBOOK (social networks et al) is that they are not representative of my real life social network. I think I will try and make this site, my real life social dashboard. In order of priority - openid - my profile - my friends - my feeds - feeds I read Hmmm - has anyone created a FACEBOOK RSS application? that packages the news feed(s) from FACEBOOK as an RSS feed?

Facebook. Social Networking.I have been reading a little about facebook authentication models and openid. Ultimately, time the bear, I will try and play with both for web authentication. Having said that - I really should build a facebook application. I have been evangelizing social networks - or rather the applications that will spring from them for quite a while. So time to put or shut up to demonstrate them. Applications... freecycle, sharing and garage sale applications sports matching/challenges and scheduling sports/game pickup social lending (immediate transfer, social terms) pull ads (ie as a person I subscribe to ad feeds to pay for services I want). - the distinction really needs to be clear. IE I AM LOOKING FOR NEW CAR (filter: Toyota) ...Diapers coupons, used table hockey game and allow the ads to become more focused as we mature within our buying cycles. I'll post more... farming? cooperative purchasing? What is the advantage of an online social network. awareness? community? communication? w/in social circles.

Amazon S3 - online/real timeI have been thinking of spending some time to build an S3 front end real time / online backup tool. So I did a search first... and have installed Jungle Disk. so far... I am quite impressed. I do imagine a little more from a tool, so maybe there is still some value in cloning the S3 pieces and adding on the stuff that I think should be added. Steep curve at the bottom of the hill for me right now. But I'll think about it anyway, and maybe share my thoughts. What I like: S3 Mapped Drive to S3 Selected folders for backup. ===================== Additional? I might want to share my collection

Recording ProjectWe are going to record some tunes for, I guess, archival purposes. I have organized our songs into "projects" that loosely reflect the time lines they represent, but also into smaller projects to make the overall project easier. We will - 1 record a very basic frame of each song - this will be a more robust "click track" if you will. But help us clearly establish the boundaries of each track, give something to practice with and record an analog version of the song with. Once we complete the analog recording for the complete project (or partial), we'll pass it to Duncan that will help us rejig and digitally record the song. Should be a fun process, but possibly quite time consuming as well. These collections are, c/w project code names: The First Six Minutes (live) ============== Brush Without Fear Bars Silent Cancer Paul Space Ladder ========== Taxes Superbabe (knows the score) Decided Stories First Armed Mission to Mars Corner Store Death to Algae Gospel According to Mark The Night Watchman ============== Angry at Sunrise (instrumental) Slow Death to Algae Who're You The Artist and the Salesman (Line Up!) Bite Your Tongue I don't wanna go to work She (is very hot) Fiction Flu Katrina (is a hurricane) Overlooking the river ================ Erotomania Fat, Neurotic, Homosexual FUH2 Where are we going Saint Barry Middle-Aged Man
